There is a story that continues to be written every day, and an invitation for those to return to who they were meant to be. That story is continued by every person who finds refuge through emergency housing, every guest who receives a meal, shower or kind word; and every child that is met by someone who will see them
For the last 25 years, I have served marginalized communities — drawn to the gold within the people I've met; and have served alongside my husband and co-founder for the last 12. I wouldn’t trade the life God has given us for all the riches in the world, because what we get to collect is what is most precious to the Father…people. Life’s greatest treasure. After starting a small after-school center in the heart of Oak Park — called the House of Acts, we watched a faithful God quickly grow our small vision into a ministry that now serves over 300 families weekly. Thank you for being a part of our mission, to create spaces of connection so that sons and daughters can remember who they truly are, and rebuild their communities.

We have an excellent program, amazing staff, and incredible partners in this work, but none of that is what has made the change. We are factors that have created space for these women to do the unthinkable – they have been given the space to change their mind about themselves. An individual whose mind is renewed and set in truth is an individual who not only changes their own life, but they change the trajectory of their children and those they encounter along the way. They become, not a better version of themselves or someone new, they uncover who they were always created to be. The debris of life, trauma, abuse, disempowerment, and victimization is removed, and they find themselves in the full permission to return to the powerful individual they are, restored to themselves and their purpose, and given the ability to be a rebuilder of hope and wonder.
Cultivating spaces for connection. When you enter our refuge housing, you often hear, "This doesn't feel like a shelter." We have found that home has been a word so often lost in generations of displacement and trauma. Keeping bags packed as a child and experiencing life on the move became a familiar narrative for many, going back generations. We ask those who walk through our doors, "Who has believed in you?" Again and again, we hear the response, "No one." That response is what propels us to provide space for that to change. Sometimes, that looks like giving a 24-hour bed. We value the space to nurture and introduce a connection to a renewed idea of what home can be. We believe in the power of choice and personal decisions to break harmful patterns and create new possibilities. When an individual's mind is renewed, it's not merely their life that is changed but also new trajectories for their children and communities to experience home differently.
Those who return and have the opportunity to continue to experience restoration become the rebuilders of our cities, state, and nation. Personal healing produces the desire in so many to become a part of the solutions needed today. When housing is beautifully merged with restoration, community, and the opportunity to become a rebuilder, it combines mentorship, leadership development, and continued healing while investing in others as a model of true community transformation. We see an ecosystem impacted powerfully as rebuilders return.
Through rhythm, dance, sound, painting and various expressions of art we watch children cultivate curiosity and exposure to new melodies where minds and bodies are awakened to creativity. Like a garden, we witness color begin to return to ordinary days that spark the wonder of childhood imagination for children and their families.
